Coimbatore Police Form Anti-Narcotics Task Forces

Coimbatore: The city and rural police have established anti-narcotics task forces, specialized units dedicated to drug eradication, following orders from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The CM had mandated the creation of 65 such task forces across the state to curb drug peddling and usage.

Task Force Formation

Based on this directive, the city police have formed two teams, while the rural police have formed one. Police officials in the district confirmed that the anti-narcotics task forces are ready and awaiting the Chief Minister's formal launch to begin field operations.

A senior police official stated that personnel have already been identified and are on standby. "Within the city limits, two teams have been formed – one for the north zone and the other for the south zone. Each unit consists of a sub-inspector and five police personnel, with dedicated vehicles. Similarly, a team led by a sub-inspector and five officers is formed in the rural limits."

Deployment and Operations

The official added that the units are prepared for deployment. "As soon as the Chief Minister formally launches the project, these units will commence field operations." The anti-narcotics task forces will register First Information Reports against drug peddlers and users. Unlike earlier special teams for drug eradication, these units will work exclusively to curb drug movement.

This initiative is part of a broader state-wide effort to combat drug trafficking and abuse. The task forces are expected to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement in tackling narcotics-related crimes.
