Bokaro: Chances of flight operations beginning from the upcoming Bokaro airport have brightened after authorities completed a crucial aviation safety upgrade on Wednesday. The district administration installed an obstacle light system on Satanpur Hill, located a few kilometers from the airport premises, as part of mandatory safety compliance required for commercial aviation clearance.
Solar-Powered System Ensures Uninterrupted Operation
Bokaro Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nath Jha confirmed that the newly installed system is solar-powered with battery backup, ensuring it functions continuously even during power failures. “The obstacle light system has been designed to operate round the clock without dependency on conventional electricity,” he said.
Importance of Obstacle Lighting in Aviation Safety
Obstacle lighting is a mandatory requirement under aviation safety norms for tall structures and elevated terrain. It enables pilots to identify potential hazards during landing and takeoff, especially in low-visibility conditions such as fog, heavy rain, or night operations. The installation at Satanpur Hill, which stands as a significant elevation near the airport, addresses a critical safety parameter.
Previous Safety Measures and Current Progress
Officials noted that similar safety measures were implemented earlier in November 2025, when obstacle lights were installed on three tall chimneys within the Bokaro Steel Plant premises. With the latest installation at Satanpur Hill, the safety infrastructure around the airport zone has been significantly strengthened. The district administration is working in coordination with aviation authorities to ensure all requirements for commercial flight operations are met.
This development brings hope for the long-awaited start of commercial flights from Bokaro airport, which is expected to boost regional connectivity and economic growth. The completion of this safety upgrade marks a crucial step forward in the airport's operational readiness.
