Amritsar Police Seize 30 kg Heroin, Bust Cross-Border Cartel

In a major breakthrough, the Amritsar police have recovered over 30 kilograms of heroin and dismantled a cross-border drug smuggling cartel, arresting six individuals involved in the illegal narcotics trade on Thursday.

Details of the Operation

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigations have uncovered links to a Dubai-based smuggler who allegedly coordinated the trafficking of heroin consignments across the international border. The arrested accused acted on his instructions, retrieving drug consignments from pre-designated locations and distributing them across various parts of Punjab, the DGP said in a post on X.

The operation highlights the growing nexus between international drug traffickers and local operatives. Police officials confirmed that the seized heroin is valued at nearly Rs 200 crore in the international black market, underscoring the scale of the racket.

Legal Proceedings

An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Chheharta police station in Amritsar. Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said investigations are underway to uncover the cartel’s complete network, including backward and forward linkages, financial transactions, and possible hawala connections used to facilitate the illegal trade.

Commissioner Bhullar added that further arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation progresses. The police are also probing the role of other suspects and the source of the heroin, which is believed to have originated from across the border.

Impact on Regional Security

This seizure is one of the largest in recent months in Punjab, a state that has been a focal point in the fight against drug trafficking. The successful operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency cooperation. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.

The case is being closely monitored by senior officials, and the police are confident of dismantling the entire network. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
