Search operations are ongoing for four individuals who have been missing since a flash flood struck Arunachal Pradesh, while several key roads remain blocked by landslides triggered by the deluge, officials said on Thursday.
Flash Flood and Landslides Hit Multiple Areas
The flash flood, which occurred late Wednesday, swept away homes and damaged infrastructure in several districts of the northeastern state. The missing persons are believed to have been caught in the sudden surge of water. Rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster management authorities, have been deployed to the affected areas.
Landslides have blocked major roads, including the crucial highway connecting the state capital Itanagar to other parts of the region. This has hampered relief efforts and isolated several villages. Authorities are using heavy machinery to clear debris and restore connectivity.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reviewed the situation and directed officials to expedite rescue and relief operations. He assured that all necessary resources are being mobilized to assist those affected. The state government has also set up relief camps for displaced families.
According to a statement from the state disaster management authority, “Search teams are combing the affected areas using boats and sniffer dogs. The priority is to locate the missing persons and provide medical aid to the injured.”
Impact on Local Communities
The flood has caused extensive damage to crops and livestock, affecting the livelihoods of many residents. Local reports indicate that several houses have been completely destroyed, and many families have lost their belongings. The blocked roads are also preventing the supply of essential goods to remote villages.
Weather officials have warned of more rain in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and landslides. The state government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations.
