World Environment Day was observed with a unique blend of environmental awareness and cultural remembrance in Santiniketan, where a Raktakarabi (Red Oleander) sapling was planted to commemorate the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic play Raktakarabi.
Initiative Led by Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee
The initiative was led by acclaimed instrumentalist, composer and Grammy jury member Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee in collaboration with Mohor Bithika Angan. The sapling was ceremonially planted within the premises of the residence of legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponent Kanika Bandyopadhyay, adding a layer of historical and cultural significance to the occasion.
Musical Performances Enhance the Event
The event also featured musical performances by Priyam Mukherjee and Ritapa Bhattacharya, who rendered the Rabindra Sangeet Marubijoyer Ketan Urao, creating an atmosphere that reflected both Tagore’s artistic legacy and the spirit of environmental stewardship.
Personal Connection for Prodyut Mukherjee
Speaking at the event, Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee said, “June 5 marks not only World Environment Day but also my birthday. If we fail to keep the earth healthy, what legacy will we leave for future generations? Planting a tree in this hallowed land is a matter of immense pride and reverence for me.”
Relevance of Tagore’s Work Highlighted
Representatives of Mohor Bithika Angan, Priyam Mukherjee and Ritapa Bhattacharya, highlighted the enduring relevance of Tagore’s work. “Raktakarabi remains a milestone in literature. Commemorating its centenary through such an initiative carries deep significance,” they said.
Family and Community Support
Family members of Kanika Bandyopadhyay also welcomed the initiative, which brought together environmental consciousness, music and literature in a tribute to Tagore’s enduring legacy.
