The United Nations nuclear watchdog has intensified pressure on Iran, with its governing board adopting a resolution demanding greater cooperation from Tehran over its nuclear programme. The move comes amid growing concerns over Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the lack of access granted to international inspectors since military strikes targeted key nuclear facilities last year.
Resolution Details
The resolution, adopted on Wednesday at the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna, received approval from twenty-one members of the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors. Russia, China and Niger opposed it, while 10 countries abstained. The proposal was introduced by France, the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States.
Diplomatic Pressure
A senior Western diplomat said the measure is intended to maintain diplomatic pressure on Iran and push it to comply with its international safeguards obligations, AP reported. The board has stated that it stands ready to take further action, including considering a formal non-compliance report that could eventually be submitted to the Security Council.
Concerns Over Uranium Stockpile
According to the IAEA, Iran possesses approximately 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 per cent purity. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi recently warned that such a stockpile could theoretically be sufficient for up to 10 nuclear bombs if Tehran chose to weaponise it, while stressing that there is no evidence Iran currently possesses a nuclear weapon.
Regional Tensions
The development comes against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions, with recent military exchanges involving Iran and the United States threatening to further complicate diplomatic efforts surrounding Tehran's nuclear activities. The resolution aims to ensure Iran complies with its safeguards obligations and provides inspectors the access they require.
