The Mohan safari zone in the Corbett Tiger Reserve, located in Tadam village of Talla Salt in Bageshwar district, has been shut indefinitely after two tiger attacks in a month, officials said on Tuesday.
Details of the Closure
The zone, which permitted approximately 20 safari jeeps per day, was closed following growing concerns over human-wildlife conflict. Mohan range officer Ganga Saran stated, “Our focus is on identifying and capturing the animal. Patrolling is under way in nearby villages and experts from Corbett Tiger Reserve have been called in to assist.”
Background of the Incidents
The closure comes after villagers protested, claiming that safari activities since the zone's opening in 2024 have disrupted wildlife movement. The latest attack occurred on Sunday evening when 53-year-old Mahipal Singh Mehra was killed by a tiger while cutting grass near his field. Earlier, an elderly villager was also killed in a similar attack in the same area.
Community Response
Social activist Narayan Singh Rawat expressed concern that rising tourism pressure is pushing animals out of their natural habitat. “While the government earns revenue from tourism, residents are facing the consequences,” he said. The indefinite closure aims to ensure safety and facilitate the capture of the problematic tiger.
Authorities have intensified patrolling and are working with wildlife experts to prevent further incidents. The decision underscores the delicate balance between tourism and conservation in India's protected areas.
