MoU signed for compressed bio-gas plant in Assam
North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), a joint venture between the Government of Assam and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese automaker Suzuki and NDDB to establish a compressed bio-gas (CBG) plant in Assam. The plant will convert organic waste into renewable energy, marking a significant step towards sustainable development in the region.
Details of the agreement
The MoU was signed on 5 July 2026 in the presence of senior officials from the Assam government, Suzuki, and NDDB. Under the agreement, Suzuki will provide technical expertise and investment for the CBG plant, while NDDB will supply dairy waste and other organic feedstock. NEDFL will manage the operations and marketing of the bio-gas under its Purabi brand. The plant is expected to produce approximately 10 tonnes of CBG per day, which will be used as fuel for vehicles and industrial purposes.
Impact on renewable energy and waste management
The project will address two critical issues: waste management and energy security. Assam generates large amounts of organic waste from dairy farms and agricultural activities, which often leads to environmental pollution. The CBG plant will convert this waste into clean fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. According to a government spokesperson, the initiative aligns with India's target of increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix and promoting a circular economy.
Economic and social benefits
The plant is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region, particularly in waste collection and plant operations. It will also provide additional income to dairy farmers by purchasing their waste. Suzuki's involvement is part of its global commitment to carbon neutrality, and the company has expressed interest in expanding similar projects in other parts of India. The Assam government has assured full support for the project, including land allocation and regulatory clearances.
