In an inspiring story of passion triumphing over profession, a Mangaluru-based electrician has single-handedly created a comprehensive digital platform to save and promote the Tulu language. Sachin, who studied only up to Class 10, has developed TuluVerse, a web application designed to make learning and using Tulu easier for everyone.
From Electrician to App Developer: A Five-Month Journey
Sachin's journey was not easy. Despite having no formal training in coding, his determination to contribute meaningfully to his native language drove him to find a way. "I realised that finding exact translations for Tulu words is often challenging," Sachin explained. Lacking programming knowledge, he turned to the internet and artificial intelligence tools to build the application on various free online platforms.
This choice came with a significant time cost. While paid tools could have slashed development time to just three or four days, relying on free resources meant the process stretched over more than five months. The challenges continued even after completion, as the app was rejected twice during the testing phase before finally going live approximately two weeks ago.
What Does TuluVerse Offer to Users?
The application is a one-stop platform that consolidates several key features for language learners and speakers. Its core offerings include a Tulu dictionary and an instant translator. To ensure accuracy and richness of content, the Tulu Cultural and Research Foundation supported the initiative by providing the necessary vocabulary.
Understanding the multilingual context of its users, TuluVerse supports a wide array of languages. Users can access it in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, English, and Sanskrit. The app also features a Tulu calendar, adding a cultural dimension to the utility. Sachin designed the app to cater to a broad audience, from absolute beginners to fluent speakers looking for a reliable digital resource.
Growing Traction and Future Dreams for Tulunadu
Since its launch, TuluVerse is gradually gaining traction, particularly among language enthusiasts and the younger generation. Sachin notes that the user base is slowly but steadily increasing, validating the need for such a digital intervention.
Looking ahead, Sachin has grander visions for preserving the cultural heritage of Tulunadu. He hopes to document legendary stories and folklore from the region in video and audio formats. Although work on this ambitious content project is yet to begin, it highlights his long-term commitment to being a custodian of Tulu culture through technology.
