Apple iOS 26.4 Beta Launches with Key Updates

Apple Rolls Out iOS 26.4 Developer Beta with Significant Enhancements

Apple has officially launched the first beta version of iOS 26.4 to developers, marking a substantial update to the iPhone operating system. This preliminary release introduces a wide array of new features and refinements across apps and services, with a focus on content discovery, security improvements, and everyday usability enhancements.

Key Features and Functionality Updates

The iOS 26.4 beta brings several notable additions that promise to transform user experience. Apple Music receives a significant upgrade with the introduction of Playlist Playground, a feature that allows users to generate custom playlists from text prompts. Users can input ideas, moods, or themes to receive automated song suggestions, with preset options like "morning coffee music" or "disco songs that defined the 1970s." The tool creates 25-song playlists with suggested titles and enables further customization through additional prompts, cover image selection, and descriptions. Apple Music also now includes a "Concerts Near You" section to highlight local shows and tour dates, alongside redesigned albums and playlists featuring full-page artwork. Users can add songs to multiple playlists simultaneously through an updated interface.

Apple Podcasts gains video podcast support via HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), allowing users to switch between audio and video playback, download video episodes for offline viewing, and stream content over Wi-Fi or cellular networks. The app's existing editorial sections and personalized recommendations will now incorporate video podcasts.

Security and Messaging Improvements

Security enhancements are a major focus in iOS 26.4. Stolen Device Protection, first introduced in 2023, is now enabled by default for all iPhone users. This feature adds extra authentication requirements for sensitive actions such as accessing passwords, making Safari purchases, or modifying Find My settings. Some actions are completely blocked without Face ID or Touch ID verification, while others require a one-hour security delay.

In a significant move for cross-platform communication, Apple is testing end-to-end encryption for RCS messages in iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4. This development makes encrypted messaging between Android and iPhone devices more comparable to iMessage, with encrypted RCS messages displaying a lock icon. Apple is currently testing RCS encryption between iPhones, with broader cross-platform support expected in future updates. The Messages app also receives new animations for actions like initiating conversations.

Interface and System-Wide Changes

A new centralized Apple Account hub replaces profile sections in individual apps like the App Store and Apple Music. While functionality remains unchanged, the App Store now features clearer distinctions among apps, purchases, and updates. App updates require two taps to access, and the navigation bar no longer includes a dedicated Search button; search functionality appears at the top of the screen when selected.

iOS 26.4 introduces an Ambient Music widget for the Home and Lock Screen, offering built-in sound options for sleep, focus, and wellness. The Wallpaper Gallery has been updated to allow easy browsing and downloading of wallpapers by category, including Weather, Astronomy, and Emoji. A similar design refresh has been applied to the Watch Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app.

Additional App and Feature Updates

Freeform gains Creator Studio support, providing subscribers access to a Content Hub with additional shapes, graphics, photos, and illustrations, along with AI-powered image creation and editing tools. The app also receives a new icon.

Reminders now includes an "Urgent" category that automatically triggers alarm notifications to prevent missed reminders. In iCloud settings, a new iCloud.com preference replaces the previous web access option and adds an "Allow Search" preference for trusted devices.

The Health app adds an Average Bedtime feature to the Sleep category and an enhanced Vitals view in the US, displaying blood oxygen saturation readings directly on daily line graphs. Camera settings now include an "Audio Zoom" preference that adjusts audio recording during video zooming.

Future Developments and Regional Testing

CarPlay references suggest potential future support for Apple TV, enabling video playback on vehicle displays when parked. Apple has also reiterated plans to support AirPlay video streaming to CarPlay screens.

Other system modifications include relocated hotspot data usage information, the addition of Chinese (Taiwan) as a language option for Live Captions, minor visual changes to passcode entry screens, and a new Shortcuts action for setting battery charge limits. While iOS 26.4 does not include new emojis, code references indicate they will be added in later releases.

For users in the European Union, Apple is testing notification forwarding to third-party wearables and proximity pairing for accessories, enabling one-tap pairing similar to AirPods.

The beta is currently limited to developers, with a public beta anticipated in the coming weeks. This release represents a comprehensive update that addresses multiple aspects of the iOS ecosystem, from entertainment and communication to security and productivity.
