The much-awaited Missing Link stretch on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will open to traffic on May 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone for one of India's busiest inter-city corridors. After years of delays and complex engineering challenges, this new 13.3-kilometer section promises to slash travel time by at least 30 minutes and enhance safety.
What is the Missing Link?
The Missing Link is a newly constructed section connecting Khopoli on the Mumbai side to Kusgaon near Lonavla. It bypasses the old Khandala ghat stretch, a winding and congestion-prone route that has long been a bottleneck. The new alignment shortens the distance by about 6 kilometers and offers a smoother, more predictable journey.
Travel Time and Toll Benefits
Commuters can expect travel time between Pune and Mumbai to reduce by at least 30 minutes, with even greater savings during peak hours or holiday rush. Importantly, no additional toll will be levied for using the new stretch. The existing toll system at Talegaon and Khalapur remains unchanged, ensuring faster travel without extra cost.
Massive Engineering Effort
Built at a cost of approximately Rs 6,695 crore, the project has been under development since 2019. It gained momentum after the Covid-19 slowdown but faced multiple delays due to extreme weather in the ghat section, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, as well as global supply chain disruptions.
Record-Breaking Tunnels
One of the project's most striking features is its twin tunnels. The longer tunnel stretches 8.9 kilometers, making it one of the longest road tunnels in Asia. The second tunnel is 1.9 kilometers long. Both are 23.5 meters wide, potentially earning a Guinness World Record for the widest road tunnel.
Iconic Tiger Valley Bridge
The Missing Link includes a 650-meter cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley, rising more than 180 meters high. It is among the tallest road bridges in India, built using advanced techniques like jump formwork. This bridge stands as a major engineering achievement within the project.
Phased Opening and Safety Measures
In the first six months, only cars and buses will be allowed on the Missing Link. Heavy vehicles and those carrying hazardous materials will continue using the existing ghat section. This phased rollout aims to study traffic behavior and ensure safety before expanding access to goods vehicles.
Inauguration and Future Plans
The Missing Link will be inaugurated on Maharashtra Day by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Authorities will closely monitor traffic and safety conditions in the initial months before deciding on allowing goods vehicles. The project is expected to gain international recognition for its scale and design.
