The Maharashtra government is set to implement significant changes to post-SSC polytechnic courses in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The updated curriculum will introduce subjects such as soft skills, social and life skills, yoga, entrepreneurship, Indian knowledge systems, environment and sustainability, management, and startup studies, among others. Admissions to these programmes are expected to commence from May 20.
Seat Availability and Past Trends
There are nearly 1 lakh polytechnic seats available across the state. In the previous academic year, over 1.5 lakh aspirants applied for these courses. To avoid delays in the admission process, the government has decided to continue with the existing online service provider this year, despite earlier plans to change vendors.
Revised K Scheme Curriculum
The updated ‘K Scheme’ curriculum for diploma courses, introduced by the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education, places a stronger emphasis on skill development, emerging technologies, and industry readiness. Implemented under the guidance of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), the new curriculum follows an outcome-based credit system comprising six semesters and a total of 120 credits. Students now have the option to study and appear for examinations in both English and Marathi.
Enhanced Industrial Training
To strengthen practical exposure, the duration of industrial training has been doubled from six weeks to 12 weeks. This move aims to better prepare students for the workforce and enhance their hands-on skills.
Centres of Excellence and Labs
To further promote skill development, the board has established nine Centres of Excellence in areas such as robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 3D printing. Additionally, 41 multipurpose computer centres and five e-Yantra labs have been set up across the state to provide students with access to advanced technology and hands-on learning opportunities.
Government's Vision and Student Benefits
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced the admissions and encouraged students to take advantage of the reforms under NEP. He highlighted that polytechnic courses allow for lateral entry into second-year engineering programmes and equip students with skills to become technicians, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Patil also noted that students have secured placement packages of up to Rs 1 lakh through campus placements.
Due to the revised curricula and various initiatives undertaken by the DTE, the admission rate in diploma courses has risen from 80% in 2022-23 to 95% in the last academic session, reflecting the growing popularity and effectiveness of these programmes.
