A large earthen urn, estimated to be more than a century old, was unearthed on Friday from an agricultural field in Sivayam village near Krishnarayapuram in Karur district, Tamil Nadu. The discovery was made by Arumugam, a 50-year-old farmer, while preparing his 20-cent rain-fed land for sowing sorghum. He noticed a large pit and immediately informed the village administrative officer (VAO).
Revenue Officials Inspect and Excavate the Site
Following the report, revenue officials visited the site and conducted an inspection. An earthmover was used to carefully excavate the area surrounding the pit, revealing a massive urn buried beneath the surface. According to officials, the earthen artifact measures about four feet in height. Its widest mid-section has a diameter of nearly three feet, while the opening measures around one-and-a-half feet in diameter.
Urn Secured for Expert Examination
The urn has been secured by the revenue department and shifted to the Krishnarayapuram taluk office for safe custody. Officials stated that the artifact appears to be ancient, though its exact age and historical significance can only be determined after a detailed examination by experts. The district administration has informed the Tamil Nadu Department of Archaeology about the find and requested a scientific assessment. The discovery has sparked interest among locals and historians, who await further analysis to understand the urn's origins and purpose.
