Nintendo Switch Overtakes DS to Become Company's Top-Selling Console
Nintendo's hybrid gaming console, the Switch, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the company's best-selling console of all time. With over 155 million units sold worldwide, the Switch has officially surpassed the Nintendo DS, which previously held the top position within Nintendo's product lineup.
Historic Achievement in Console Sales
Launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has demonstrated exceptional staying power in the competitive gaming market. The device's unique hybrid design, allowing both handheld and docked play, resonated strongly with consumers. In terms of total gaming console sales across all manufacturers, the Switch now occupies the second position globally, trailing only Sony's PlayStation 2, which sold over 160 million units after its 2000 release.
Nintendo announced this significant achievement in its latest financial report, though the company's shares experienced an 11% decline. Investors expressed concerns regarding software sales performance and rising memory chip prices that could impact future profitability.
The Success Formula: Games and Pandemic Boost
According to industry experts, the Switch's unprecedented success can be attributed to several key factors. Christopher Dring, a respected gaming analyst, noted that initial expectations for the original Switch were "very low" at launch. However, the console benefited tremendously from Nintendo's strong roster of exclusive games featuring beloved franchises.
"Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Mario Kart have all had their most successful games released during the Switch era," Dring explained. "Even games like Luigi's Mansion and Mario Party have sold tens of millions of copies."
The COVID-19 pandemic also played a crucial role in the Switch's sales trajectory. During lockdown periods, the console experienced a notable spike in demand as people sought entertainment options while confined to their homes.
Rachel Watts, another gaming expert, observed: "Everyone I knew had a Nintendo Switch. Nintendo's roster includes games geared towards younger audiences, and, as a handheld console, it made the Switch incredibly popular."
Switch 2 Performance and Future Challenges
The successor device, Nintendo Switch 2, launched in June 2025, has sold approximately 17 million units as of year-end. Nintendo described this performance as a "good start" for the sequel console, though questions remain about whether it can replicate the original Switch's phenomenal success.
At a recent post-results briefing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa highlighted potential challenges, including higher memory chip prices that could weigh on profits. The cost of RAM, once an affordable computer component, has increased considerably and may lead to price increases for many electronic devices in 2026.
Additional factors such as US tariffs and "the current economic situation in many of Nintendo's major markets" could potentially limit the Switch 2's performance compared to its predecessor, according to industry publications.
While the Switch 2's success appears guaranteed given Nintendo's strong brand loyalty, some analysts suggest the company "might have to settle for it 'only' selling a lot, rather than it selling more than any other Nintendo device before it."
The gaming industry continues to watch Nintendo's strategy closely as the company navigates these challenges while building on the remarkable legacy of its best-selling console.
