Fortnite Makes a Comeback on Android as Google Revamps Play Store Policies
In a significant development for the mobile gaming industry, Epic Games has declared that its blockbuster title Fortnite will be reinstated on Android devices and the Google Play Store across the globe. This move follows Google's implementation of sweeping changes to its app distribution and payment systems, aimed at fostering greater competition and flexibility for developers.
End of a Bitter Feud: Epic and Google Settle Disputes
The decision marks the resolution of a protracted conflict between Epic Games and Google over app store regulations and associated fees. In an official blog post, Epic highlighted that Google's updated policies will enable enhanced competition among app stores and grant developers increased autonomy over in-app payment processing. Tim Sweeney, the founder and CEO of Epic Games, expressed his approval on social media platform X, stating, "Google is opening up Android all the way with robust support for competing stores, competing payments, and a better deal for all developers. So, we've settled all of our disputes worldwide. THANKS GOOGLE!" This comment was in response to an announcement by Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, detailing the platform's new direction.
Epic's Vision for Android and the Future
Epic Games elaborated that these changes signify a pivotal shift towards a more open Android ecosystem, with all global disputes now amicably resolved. The company confirmed, "Android is now fully open to robust competition among mobile app stores outside of the US, and Epic and Google have submitted a proposal to the US District Court to finalize the same here." Furthermore, Epic emphasized that developers worldwide will have the freedom to choose between Google Play's payment system and alternative payment methods, benefiting from reduced fees and the option to direct users to external purchase platforms. Sweeney added in another post, "Fortnite will return to Google Play Store worldwide soon. Epic Games Store continues supporting Android worldwide alongside Windows and Mac, and installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026."
Google's Comprehensive Policy Overhaul
Google has unveiled a series of updates to the Play Store's operational framework, introducing more billing alternatives for developers and lowering service fees. Developers can now integrate their own payment systems within apps alongside Google Play billing or guide users to complete transactions outside the app environment. Additionally, Google is launching a Registered App Stores program to simplify the installation of third-party app stores on Android devices, with initial rollout planned outside the United States before broader expansion.
Sameer Samat underscored the platform's commitment to openness, stating, "At this important moment, we want to continue leading the way in how developers distribute their apps and games to people on billions of devices across many form factors. A modern platform must be flexible, providing developers and users with choice and openness as well as a safe experience." He outlined the three-pronged approach: expanded billing options, the registered app stores initiative, and reduced fees coupled with new developer programs.
Under the revised fee structure, developers utilizing Google Play's billing system in regions such as the United States, United Kingdom, and European Economic Area will incur a 5% billing rate. Service fees for in-app purchases will be lowered to 20% for new installations, with some developers eligible for further reductions under incentive schemes, dropping to 15%.
What This Means for Fortnite and the Android Landscape
With the disputes behind them and new policies in effect, Epic Games has confirmed the global return of Fortnite to the Google Play Store. The company also reaffirmed its dedication to investing in the Epic Games Store for Android, aiming to bolster support for both developers and gamers. The phased implementation of these changes will commence with updated fees rolling out in the United States, United Kingdom, and European Economic Area by June 30, followed by Australia by September 30, and Japan and Korea by December 31. A comprehensive global rollout is anticipated by September 2027.
Google asserts that these modifications are designed to cultivate a more robust Android ecosystem, ultimately leading to more prosperous developers and a richer selection of apps and games for users worldwide.
