Apple's iPhone 18 Pro May Feature Deep Red Color, A20 Pro Chip, and Launch Shift

Apple is preparing for its upcoming device launches next week, but a significant leak has emerged regarding the iPhone 18 series. According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is actively experimenting with a deep red color option for the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. This development follows the successful introduction of the Cosmic Orange variant on the iPhone 17 Pro, which gained substantial popularity in China, where consumers associated it with Hermès' signature orange hue.

Color Strategy and Design Decisions

Gurman notes that red is currently the flagship color in testing, though Apple may retain orange in the lineup as well. "Apple is now considering a deep red color for its next lineup. Given the success of orange, I wouldn't be surprised if the company keeps that option around and just adds the red as an additional choice. But red and orange might be a little too close on the color wheel to have both," states the Bloomberg report. This proximity on the color spectrum presents a design challenge for Apple, as it must decide whether to offer both shades or prioritize one.

While orange helped drive sales, Apple faces a critical design decision: whether to keep both orange and red, which sit close together on the color wheel. Gurman suggests that rumored purple and brown options may simply be variations of the red shade under consideration. Additionally, Gurman reports that Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone is expected to avoid bold colors altogether. Instead, the foldable device is likely to launch in more utilitarian tones reminiscent of early iPhone models, such as dark gray/black and light silver/white.

Expected Launch Schedule and Chip Details

Apple typically announces new iPhone models at its Fall event in September, but this pattern is rumored to change in 2026. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may debut in the typical September timeframe. However, the standard iPhone 18 might be skipped at the September event this year. According to sources, it could be unveiled next year in March alongside the iPhone Air 2.

New A20 Pro Chip May Power the iPhone 18 Pro Max

Apple's new A20 Pro chip, which will be the company's first processor manufactured using a 2nm process, is expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This advanced chip will employ "Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module" (WMCM) packaging, making it more compact, powerful, and energy-efficient than earlier iterations. Moreover, Apple may switch from third-party chips to its own modem for the first time in the Pro models. This modification should greatly extend battery life, especially when paired with the A20 Pro's powerful processor.

Market Implications and Consumer Response

The introduction of a deep red color could appeal to consumers seeking bold and distinctive options, building on the success of the Cosmic Orange variant. Apple's strategic color choices have historically influenced sales, particularly in key markets like China. The potential launch schedule shift and chip upgrades highlight Apple's ongoing innovation in both design and technology, aiming to maintain its competitive edge in the smartphone industry.
