Uttar Pradesh has rapidly transformed into one of India's fastest-growing hubs for digital infrastructure, fueled by a proactive state government policy and a series of investment-friendly reforms. This strategic push is positioning the state as a critical pillar of the nation's data-driven future.
Policy Launch and Immediate Success
The cornerstone of this transformation is the state's dedicated data centre policy, which was officially notified in January 2021. The policy was designed with a clear goal: to encourage the development of modern, private data centre parks and build a strong, supportive ecosystem for this vital sector.
The initial ambition was to establish three data centre parks with a combined capacity of 250 megawatts. Demonstrating remarkable momentum, the state not only met this target but achieved it within the very first year of the policy's implementation, finishing well ahead of the original schedule.
Scaling Ambitions: A Tenfold Increase in Target
Bolstered by this early and overwhelming response, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to significantly raise its ambitions. The policy was revised to reflect a much larger vision. The number of proposed data centre parks was increased from the initial three to eight.
More impressively, the total capacity target was expanded dramatically to 900 megawatts. This massive scaling is expected to be backed by an estimated investment influx of around Rs 30,000 crore, highlighting the scale of confidence in the state's digital roadmap.
Current Investments and Operational Strength
The ground reality already reflects strong progress towards these new goals. So far, investment proposals worth approximately Rs 21,343 crore have received official approval. These proposals encompass six major data centre parks and two smaller data centre units with capacities below 40 megawatts.
A key indicator of success is that seven of these approved projects are already operational. This active infrastructure is continuously strengthening the state's digital backbone, enhancing connectivity, and creating a robust platform for businesses and services. It solidifies Uttar Pradesh's emergence as a key player in India's rapidly expanding digital economy.
The state's focused approach on creating a conducive environment for data centres is paying rich dividends, attracting significant capital and technology while generating employment and fostering innovation in the heart of India.
