In a renewed push for sustainable transportation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting carpooling as a solution to urban congestion and pollution. However, the ecosystem in Bengaluru, often hailed as India's tech capital, continues to falter in supporting this initiative.
Rapido's Pilot Project
To revive the carpooling culture, ride-hailing platform Rapido has launched an 'Auto Seat Share' feature on a pilot basis in select areas of Bengaluru. The service allows users to share auto-rickshaw rides, reducing both costs and emissions.
Challenges in Bengaluru
Despite government encouragement, Bengaluru faces significant hurdles. Inadequate infrastructure, lack of dedicated lanes, and traffic congestion deter commuters from adopting carpooling. Moreover, trust and safety concerns remain paramount for potential users.
The pilot project aims to test the feasibility of shared auto services. If successful, it could be expanded to other cities. Rapido's initiative aligns with Modi's vision for a greener future, but the city's systemic issues need addressing for long-term success.
