The Cyberabad police commissionerate, in collaboration with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), conducted a large-scale orientation programme at the IEI ESCI Centenary Convention Centre in Hyderabad. The event saw over 750 attendees from 500 educational institutions. This initiative aims to tackle issues of congestion, compliance, safety, and affordability in student transport across Cyberabad.
Key Highlights from the Programme
Commissioner M Ramesh noted that nearly 2 lakh vehicles crowd school zones within a 15-minute window during peak hours, surpassing the rush levels of the IT corridor. He emphasized the risks of unsafe driving, accidents, and miscommunication among parents, highlighting the broader impact on children's well-being. He described the initiative as a long-term civic mobility reform that integrates schools, operators, parents, and civic authorities through a technology platform. The plan includes compliance requirements for vehicles and opportunities for gig workers, ASHA workers, and Anganwadi workers in last-mile connectivity.
Expert Insights and Survey Findings
Narayana Amit, zonal commissioner of Serilingampally, stressed that student safety extends beyond school gates. Naved Khan, CEO of SCSC, presented survey findings from 526 institutions covering 4.1 lakh students. The survey revealed that although 80% of institutions provide transport, only 30% of students use it, resulting in nearly 2 lakh private vehicles daily on the roads.
Collaborative Efforts for Better Mobility
Aparna Kalyani, deputy regional manager of TGSRTC, expressed readiness to coordinate with institutions for better visibility of student travel needs. Ramarao, Mandal Vidya Shakha Officer, emphasized integrating road safety awareness into education. The session concluded with interactive discussions and a briefing on the phased implementation of the technology platform.
This initiative marks a coordinated effort to reduce traffic congestion, enhance student safety, and establish an accountable mobility ecosystem in Cyberabad.
