The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is set to reintroduce bus priority lanes on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to enhance the efficiency of public transport and ease traffic congestion. This move comes after the previous attempt in 2019 faced challenges and was eventually discontinued.
Revival of Priority Lanes
The decision to revive the bus priority lanes was taken after a meeting between BMTC officials and the Bangalore Traffic Police. The lanes will be demarcated on the ORR stretch from Silk Board to Hebbal, covering a distance of approximately 23 kilometers. The aim is to ensure that buses can move faster, especially during peak hours, thereby encouraging more commuters to use public transport.
Implementation Plan
The implementation will be phased, with the first phase focusing on the most congested sections. Physical barriers such as bollards and road markings will be used to separate the bus lanes from regular traffic. The traffic police will enforce the rules strictly, and violators will be penalized. The BMTC will also deploy additional buses on these routes to maximize the benefit.
Expected Benefits
- Reduced travel time for bus commuters
- Lower fuel consumption and emissions
- Encouragement for more people to switch to public transport
- Improved overall traffic flow on the ORR
Challenges and Solutions
The previous attempt failed due to lack of enforcement and encroachment by private vehicles. This time, the authorities are taking a stricter approach with continuous monitoring through cameras and increased fines. Public awareness campaigns will also be conducted to educate drivers about the importance of keeping the lanes clear.
Stakeholder Reactions
Commuters have welcomed the move, hoping it will make bus travel more reliable. However, some private vehicle owners have expressed concerns about reduced road space. The authorities have assured that the impact on other traffic will be minimized through proper planning and timing.
The bus priority lane project is part of a larger initiative to improve Bengaluru's public transportation system, which also includes the expansion of the metro network and the introduction of electric buses. The success of this project could serve as a model for other cities in India.
