In a significant digital shift, the Indian Railways has witnessed a massive migration of passengers to online platforms for booking their train tickets. Official data presented in Parliament confirms that the era of standing in long queues at reservation counters is rapidly fading.

Digital Dominance in Railway Reservations

In a written reply presented in the Lok Sabha on December 3, 2025, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed a landmark statistic. He stated that e-ticketing now accounts for more than 87% of all reserved tickets booked across the vast Indian Railways network. This underscores a profound change in passenger behavior, driven by simplified online processes.

The minister acknowledged that while online booking is the preferred mode, some complaints regarding failed transactions, delayed refunds, or booking errors are received. He assured that these issues are being monitored regularly for quick resolution to ensure a seamless user experience.

Technological Fortification for a Smooth Journey

To support this enormous volume of digital transactions and protect genuine users, Indian Railways and its catering and tourism subsidiary, IRCTC, have implemented a multi-pronged strategy. The focus has been on both administrative action and robust technological upgrades.

The initiatives include deactivating suspicious user IDs, filing complaints on the National Cyber Crime Portal for fraudulently booked tickets (PNRs), and revalidating user accounts. On the tech front, the system now employs:

  • Advanced anti-BOT technologies to block automated scripts from hoarding tickets.
  • Enhanced checks and validations at various stages of the booking process.
  • Cutting-edge Content Delivery Network (CDN) solutions, which are global server networks that deliver web content faster and more reliably, even in rural areas.

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that the IRCTC website and mobile apps operate on an API-based technology. This architecture requires only minimal text-based data exchange between the user's device and IRCTC servers, ensuring efficient performance across the country.

Continuous Audits and Future Roadmap

To ensure the system's continual improvement and security, the Ministry of Railways is conducting regular third-party audits of IRCTC's technology infrastructure. This external scrutiny aims to identify potential weaknesses and implement best practices.

The minister emphasized that capacity enhancement and technological upgradation are an ongoing process for Indian Railways. These developments are pursued subject to the availability of resources and their techno-economic feasibility, ensuring sustainable and passenger-centric digital growth.
