Ludhiana Police Issue Alert on LPG Cylinder Booking Scams Amid West Asia Conflict
In Ludhiana, the ongoing West Asia conflict has disrupted LPG cylinder supplies, but police warn that the real threat lies in cyber fraudsters exploiting public apprehension. Scammers are targeting residents with fake SMS messages offering online LPG cylinder bookings, which could lead to mobile phone hacking and financial losses.
Cyber Fraud Tactics Exploiting Public Fears
According to officials, cyber criminals are sending fraudulent links via SMS, claiming to facilitate LPG cylinder bookings. Inspector Satvir Singh, SHO of the cyber crime police station, stated that clicking these links may compromise mobile devices, exposing users to monetary theft. He added that scammers might also call victims, instructing them to press certain digits on their keypads, further risking device security.
Police have urged residents to avoid unsolicited messages or calls and instead rely on their existing booking methods or opt for manual booking through trusted channels.
Evolving Scam Methods Targeting Vulnerable Moments
Inspector Singh highlighted that cyber crooks continuously adapt their strategies to deceive people. Previously, they circulated fraudulent links disguised as New Year greetings, wedding invitations during the wedding season, and Diwali gift vouchers. The current LPG-related scam is another attempt to capitalize on a pressing public issue fueled by supply concerns from the West Asia conflict.
"The administration is already sharing accurate information about LPG bookings through official news updates," Inspector Singh noted. "Residents should trust these channels rather than unknown messages."
Precautions and Official Reassurances
Police have issued a list of precautions to help residents stay safe:
- Do's: Use your traditional LPG cylinder booking system; if it fails, switch to manual booking.
- Don'ts: Do not search for new online booking methods; avoid clicking random links on WhatsApp or SMS; do not trust callers claiming to be from gas agencies.
Additionally, authorities have reassured the public that there is no cylinder shortage, as the administration has adequate stock. They advise residents to ignore rumors and rely on official information.
Broader Cyber Security Risks from APK Files
The advisory also warns about the dangers of APK files from unknown links, which can bypass security checks from trusted stores like Google Play Store. These files may contain malware such as spyware, banking trojans, or ransomware, allowing attackers to steal personal data, intercept OTPs, or remotely control devices. Fraudulent APK links are often spread through messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, posing persistent threats that are hard to detect.
In summary, Ludhiana police emphasize vigilance against cyber fraud during this period of supply uncertainty, urging residents to prioritize security over convenience.
