Karnataka has emerged as the hotspot for identity theft in India, accounting for nearly one-third of all such cases reported across the country. According to recent data, the state witnessed approximately 33% of identity theft incidents, underscoring a growing cybersecurity challenge.
Bengaluru Leads Metropolitan Cities
Bengaluru, the state capital, recorded the highest share among 19 metropolitan cities with a population exceeding 20 lakh. The city alone accounted for nearly 61% of identity theft cases in this category, far surpassing other major urban centers such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi.
Comparison with Other Cities
While Mumbai and Delhi also reported significant numbers, Bengaluru's dominance highlights a concentrated risk in India's tech hub. The data, released on May 7, 2026, points to the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in rapidly digitizing urban areas.
Identity theft involves the unauthorized use of personal information for financial fraud, and the rising cases in Karnataka reflect broader trends in digital fraud across India. Authorities are urging citizens to adopt stronger password practices and monitor financial statements regularly.
The findings have sparked discussions among policymakers about stricter regulations and better public awareness campaigns to combat identity theft. As digital transactions grow, so does the vulnerability, making it imperative for both individuals and institutions to prioritize data security.
