Haryana Police Unveils 'Abhedya' Mobile App to Tackle Cybercrime and Extortion

In a pioneering initiative to combat the rising tide of cybercrime and extortion, Haryana Police launched the 'Abhedya' mobile app on Saturday. This security platform is designed to shield citizens from a range of digital threats, including suspicious calls, threats, stalking, and harassment. The launch marks a significant step in leveraging technology for public safety in the state.

App Features and Functionality

Director General of Police (DGP) Haryana, Ajay Singhal, accompanied by ADGP and Commissioner of Police (CP) Panchkula, Subash Kabiraj, provided comprehensive details about the app's capabilities. Singhal emphasized that in today's evolving digital landscape, criminals are increasingly exploiting internet-based calling, fake numbers, and online platforms to intimidate and defraud individuals. The 'Abhedya' app serves as a robust protective barrier against such activities.

The app operates by identifying calls and messages from unknown and suspicious numbers, particularly those from international, virtual, and unsaved sources. It automatically rejects calls and blocks numbers deemed suspicious, thereby preventing potential scams. Additionally, the app deletes suspicious chats, voice messages, notifications, and voice notes from the user's device, ensuring they remain free from mental stress and fear.

In-House Development and Testing

Singhal expressed pride in highlighting that the 'Abhedya' app is a completely in-house initiative by Haryana Police, showcasing their technical prowess and innovative approach. The app underwent rigorous testing with 25 selected users, who confirmed its full effectiveness. Future improvements and updates will be implemented as needed to adapt to emerging cyber threats.

Availability and Access

To download the app, interested individuals must contact the superintendent of police in their respective district to obtain authorized access. The 'Abhedya' app will be available on both Android and Apple platforms, making it accessible to a wide range of users across Haryana.

Introduction of 'Abhedya-2.0'

During the press conference, information about 'Abhedya-2.0', an updated version of the app, was also shared. This enhanced version extends beyond internet-based fraud calls to include control over regular calls. Key features allow users to block unknown international calls, suspicious domestic calls based on user preferences, and private or hidden numbers. It ensures that only calls from saved and verified numbers are permitted, providing an additional layer of security.

This initiative underscores Haryana Police's commitment to leveraging technology for citizen safety, addressing the growing challenges of cybercrime in the digital age.
