Chennai Cyber Crime Police Arrest Man for Lawyer Impersonation in Loan Harassment Case
A 25-year-old man has been apprehended by the cyber crime police in Chennai for allegedly posing as a lawyer and harassing a 49-year-old woman in the Saligramam area. The arrest follows a complaint filed by the victim, who reported receiving threatening calls demanding repayment of a loan she never took.
Details of the Harassment and Investigation
The complainant stated that on February 20, she began receiving calls from a man and a woman who claimed to be lawyers calling from the high court. They insisted she settle dues for a loan she had allegedly defaulted on, despite her repeated denials of ever availing such a loan. The persistent calls prompted her to file a formal complaint with the authorities.
Based on her complaint, the west zone cyber crime police registered a case and launched an investigation. Through diligent tracing efforts, they identified and arrested the accused, identified as Saran, a 25-year-old resident of Alapakkam. The investigation uncovered that Saran worked as a third-party loan recovery agent for a private company.
Modus Operandi of the Accused
An in-depth probe revealed that Saran contacted individuals, including those who had not taken any loans, and threatened them by falsely presenting himself as an advocate. He claimed to be calling from an advocate's office or the Madras High Court, using different names and misrepresenting his identity during the calls. This deceptive tactic was aimed at intimidating victims into making payments for non-existent debts.
The arrest highlights the growing issue of cyber crime and fraudulent loan recovery practices in urban areas. Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant against such scams and to verify any loan-related claims through official channels before responding to demands for payment.
