In a significant victory against cybercrime, the Bhopal police successfully foiled a sophisticated digital arrest attempt aimed at financial gain, rescuing a government employee from a harrowing six-hour ordeal. The victim, a government employee stationed at Vindhyachal Bhavan in Bhopal, arrived at the police station accompanied by his wife and daughter, visibly distressed. He reported that he had received a WhatsApp message from an individual claiming to be an Inspector from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Pune. The fraudster accused the employee of using his mobile phone for terrorist activities, creating a climate of fear and intimidation.
Through a video call, the scammer placed the victim under what he termed a digital arrest, demanding compliance and threatening severe consequences. This tactic, designed to paralyze the victim with fear, is a common ploy used by cybercriminals to extract money or sensitive information.
Police Intervention: A Bold Confrontation on Camera
Acting swiftly on the complaint, a police officer engaged directly with the fraudster via the same video call. Initially, the scammer attempted to bully the officer, threatening to have his uniform stripped within two minutes. However, the officer's firm and authoritative stance quickly turned the tables.
Upon witnessing the police's resolute approach, the fraudster abruptly disconnected the call and ceased all communication with the victim. This decisive action not only ended the digital arrest but also prevented any potential financial transaction that the scammers might have coerced.
