Bengaluru Elderly Man Falls Prey to Sextortion Racket After Facebook Interaction
In a distressing incident highlighting the perils of online interactions, a 78-year-old retired resident of HAL Old Airport Road in Bengaluru became ensnared in a sophisticated sextortion scheme. What began as an innocuous connection on Facebook rapidly escalated into a harrowing ordeal, with fraudsters leveraging intimate recordings to blackmail the elderly victim.
From Casual Chat to Covert Recording
The ordeal commenced in February when the victim responded to a message from a Facebook profile identified as Radhika Aggarwal. The individual behind the profile presented herself as an Indian expatriate residing in the United Kingdom, initiating a series of calls and messages that gradually fostered a sense of familiarity.
According to a formal complaint lodged by the victim's daughter-in-law, the initial contact was made via a UK-based telephone number. Subsequently, the conversation transitioned to WhatsApp using an Indian mobile number, where the exchanges grew increasingly personal and intimate.
During one of the video calls, the fraudster allegedly coaxed the elderly man into performing explicit acts, all while clandestinely recording the interaction. This covert footage would soon become the centerpiece of a malicious extortion plot.
Escalation of Threats and Psychological Pressure
The friendly demeanor of the fraudster vanished abruptly, replaced by overt threats and demands. The accused began transmitting screenshots and video clips from the recorded call to the victim, issuing a stark ultimatum: pay Rs 2 lakh or face the public dissemination of the compromising material to his family and social circle.
To amplify the psychological torment, the perpetrator created a counterfeit Instagram account impersonating the victim. This fraudulent profile was used to add several of his relatives, followed by posts threatening to circulate the intimate photos and videos. This tactic was designed to create the illusion that the victim himself was responsible for the uploads, thereby intensifying his embarrassment and distress.
Family Intervention and Police Action
Overwhelmed by shame and anxiety, the elderly man eventually confided in his family. Due to his advanced age and the associated stress, he was unable to visit the police station personally. Consequently, his daughter-in-law stepped forward to file an official complaint on his behalf.
Law enforcement authorities have registered a case under pertinent sections of the Information Technology Act and BNS Section 318, which pertains to cheating. Investigations are currently ongoing to apprehend the culprits. Notably, the complainant has confirmed that no money has been paid to the fraudsters, underscoring the family's resolve to seek legal recourse rather than capitulate to the extortion demands.
Expert Warnings on Rising Cybercrime Trends
Cybercrime specialists caution that such sextortion incidents are becoming alarmingly prevalent. The modus operandi typically involves fraudsters cultivating online friendships, luring victims into private video calls, and surreptitiously recording compromising visuals. These recordings are then weaponized to extort money by threatening to leak the content publicly or share it with the victim's acquaintances.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities associated with digital communication, particularly for elderly individuals who may be less familiar with the tactics employed by cybercriminals. Vigilance and immediate reporting to authorities are crucial in combating such predatory schemes.
