In a significant development at the AI Impact Summit, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that India is actively collaborating with other nations to forge a consensus on a comprehensive framework for artificial intelligence. The minister emphasized that the sector is still in its early stages, requiring careful navigation between fostering innovation and implementing necessary safeguards.

During an exclusive interview, Vaishnaw articulated the government's philosophy of "cautious optimism" towards AI. He highlighted that while AI holds transformative potential across all sectors, there is a widespread awareness of its associated risks. Vaishnaw detailed India's preferred method: a techno-legal approach that blends technical solutions with legal structures. He likened the current AI landscape to "the first innings of the first match of a test series," indicating that immense innovation still lies ahead.

Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for IT companies to evolve from service providers to product and platform developers, Vaishnaw confirmed that the industry is calibrating its strategies. Focus is on developing small, trusted AI models tailored for specific enterprises, such as in banking, where data security and competitive advantage are paramount.
"Models are commoditized already," he remarked, pointing to the availability of numerous AI models that can drive productivity gains without compromising proprietary information.

On the contentious issue of regulating social media access for minors, Vaishnaw underscored the power of these platforms and the need to balance freedom of expression with constitutional responsibilities.
