Global Tech Giants Form Trusted Tech Alliance to Counter Digital Sovereignty
Tech Giants Launch Alliance for Safe, Transparent Global Technology

Major Tech Companies Unite to Launch Trusted Tech Alliance

In a significant move to foster global connectivity in the tech industry, fifteen of the world's most influential companies, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Jio Platforms, have collaborated to establish the Trusted Tech Alliance (TTA). Announced on Friday, February 13, at the Munich Security Conference, this initiative is being described as a "United Nations of Tech." Its primary goal is to ensure that technology remains safe, transparent, and accessible, irrespective of its country of origin.

Addressing the Rise of Digital Sovereignty

The formation of the TTA comes as a direct response to the growing trend of 'digital sovereignty,' where nations are increasingly attempting to build protective barriers around their technology sectors. This strategy aims to reduce dependence on foreign powers, particularly the United States. Recently, prominent leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron have voiced concerns about over-reliance on American technology, sparking a push for greater national control over data and software.

The Alliance is founded on a shared set of principles designed to create a trusted technology stack. This framework encompasses key areas including connectivity, cloud infrastructure, semiconductors, software, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Core Principles and Member Companies

The 15 member companies have committed to five core principles to guide their operations:

  • Transparent Governance: Maintaining clear corporate governance and ethical behavior.
  • Secure Technology: Building technology with robust security measures and allowing independent experts to verify their work.
  • High Standards: Ensuring that hardware meets stringent global security standards.
  • Inclusive Innovation: Supporting a digital world that is inclusive and fosters innovation.
  • Legal Compliance: Respecting the rule of law and prioritizing user privacy protection at all times.

The Alliance includes a diverse roster of global firms: Anthropic, Cohere, Microsoft, Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Reliance Jio from India, Nokia from Finland, Ericsson from Sweden, NTT from Japan, SAP from Germany, Hanwha from South Korea, and Saab from Sweden.

Industry Leaders Voice Support

Alliance members have emphasized the dangers of constructing technological barriers. Kiran Thomas, CEO of Jio Platforms, stated, "Trusted, secure, and transparent technology is essential to unlocking inclusive digital growth at global scale. Jio Platforms is proud to join the Trusted Tech Alliance to advance common standards and verifiable practices across the technology stack. Through collaboration with global partners, we aim to strengthen resilience, expand digital opportunity, and build long-term confidence in next-generation connectivity, cloud, and AI systems."

Börje Ekholm, CEO of Ericsson, warned, "There are no countries on this planet that alone can be fully sovereign." Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, added, "In the current geopolitical environment, it is critical that like-minded companies work together to protect security and advance high global standards to preserve trust in technology across borders."

Marcus Jadotte, Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google Cloud, explained, "Google Cloud has a long-held commitment to promote choice, trust, and sovereignty that is codified in our technology today. Through the Trusted Tech Alliance, we aim to champion the principles we already adhere to: Promoting customer choice and providing a portfolio of solutions, enabled by technical controls and local partnerships, to meet strict sovereignty requirements and regional standards."

This Alliance represents a concerted effort by leading tech corporations to counteract fragmentation in the global technology landscape, advocating for cooperation over isolation to ensure a secure and innovative digital future for all.
