Tata Chairman Compares AI's Impact to Steam Engine at UP Centre Launch
In a landmark address at the inauguration of eastern Uttar Pradesh's first Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran drew a powerful historical parallel, likening the transformative potential of AI to the revolutionary impact of the steam engine on human civilization. The event took place at the Maharana Pratap Institute of Technology in Gorakhpur on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the state's technological advancement.
Vision for Uttar Pradesh at the Forefront of AI Revolution
Chandrasekaran expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the opportunity to establish this center, emphasizing that the vision is to position Uttar Pradesh at the forefront of the AI revolution. "AI is not just another technology; it will bring a transformational shift in the next 5–10 years," he declared. "Just as the steam engine replaced traditional modes of transport like bullock carts and horses, AI will redefine the very infrastructure of intelligence," he added, highlighting the profound changes ahead.
Addressing Fears and Promoting Inclusivity
Acknowledging common apprehensions, Chandrasekaran noted that new technologies often trigger fear and uncertainty among people. "Whenever something new emerges, there is a natural tendency to feel anxious. But there is no need to be afraid—AI will transform lives for the better," he reassured. He stressed the importance of inclusivity, stating that AI must reach the last person in the village. "It is for everyone, and we must ensure widespread awareness and knowledge," he emphasized, underscoring the need for broad accessibility.
AI's Potential for Business and Rural Empowerment
Highlighting the vast potential of AI, Chandrasekaran predicted that it would create new business opportunities beyond current imagination. To illustrate this, he recalled an event at Bharat Mandapam in February, where 1,600 rural women learned AI tools within half a day and developed practical solutions for their villages. This example showcased how AI can empower communities and drive innovation at the grassroots level.
Expanding AI Education Across Disciplines
Chandrasekaran further stressed that AI education should not remain confined to engineering students but must extend across all academic disciplines. By integrating AI into diverse fields of study, he believes it can foster a more comprehensive understanding and application of the technology. This approach aligns with the broader goal of preparing a skilled workforce for the future.
Contributing to Viksit Bharat and Viksit Uttar Pradesh by 2047
