SpaceX Falcon Heavy Launches Viasat-3 F3 After 18 Months

SpaceX is set to launch the Viasat-3 F3 mission using its powerful Falcon Heavy rocket, which will lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the first time in 18 months. The 85-minute launch window opens at 10:21 a.m. ET (8 PM IST), with a backup opportunity on Tuesday, April 28, during an 85-minute window starting at 10:17 a.m. ET (8 PM IST). A live webcast will begin about 15 minutes before liftoff, viewable on X @SpaceX and the X TV app.

Falcon Heavy's Return to Flight

The Falcon Heavy is one of the most capable rockets in operation, combining three Falcon 9 boosters to generate over 5 million pounds of thrust. This immense power enables it to carry large payloads to geostationary orbit and beyond, making it essential for commercial and government missions. The April 27 launch marked the rocket's first since October 2024, underscoring its significance.

One of the side boosters previously supported SDA-0A, SARah-2, Transporter-11, and 18 Starlink missions, while the other supported the GOES-U mission. After stage separation, the two side boosters landed at SpaceX's Landing Zones 2 and 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The center core was expended due to the demanding trajectory required for satellite deployment.

Viasat-3 F3 Mission Objectives

The Viasat-3 F3 satellite is designed to expand broadband coverage across the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Its deployment will support the growing demand for high-speed internet services, particularly in underserved regions. SpaceX confirmed the satellite was successfully placed into orbit, achieving the mission's objectives.

This launch highlights SpaceX's reusability strategy, with the synchronized landing of the side boosters becoming a hallmark of Falcon Heavy missions. The successful deployment marks a key milestone for both SpaceX and Viasat in expanding global connectivity.
