SAP CEO Christian Klein has unveiled a new strategy for an AI-first world, introducing the concept of the "autonomous enterprise." In an email to employees, Klein emphasized that while AI is transformative, it will not replace enterprise software but rather enhance it.
Vision of the Autonomous Enterprise
"We're introducing our vision of the autonomous enterprise to redefine how businesses will run in the age of AI," Klein stated. The goal is to help customers operate smarter, respond faster, and free up capacity for higher-value work using AI assistants and agents that manage end-to-end processes across domains in a connected, real-time system.
Core Technology: SAP Business AI Platform
At the heart of this vision is the SAP Business AI Platform (BAIP), which integrates process knowledge, enterprise data, and governance into AI agents. Klein explained that BAIP builds on SAP's ERP foundation, embedding business context into AI-driven decision-making.
Competitive Positioning
Positioning SAP against competitors, Klein highlighted the company's integrated architecture for enterprise-wide autonomy, spanning finance, supply chain, human capital management, and customer experience. "These agents will go beyond task automation and act as intelligent co-workers—connecting processes, data, and decisions across the enterprise," he said.
Four Pillars of the Strategy
- Joule: A new engagement layer that brings together data, workflows, and agents.
- SAP Autonomous Suite: Runs AI-driven operations.
- Industry-Specific AI Applications: Built-in domain expertise.
- Business AI Platform: Foundation combining unified data, models, and governance.
Internal Alignment and Execution
Klein called for internal alignment to execute the shift, urging teams to "shift development focus from standalone apps to agents and a shared enterprise-grade AI context" and to work closely with customers. He noted, "This isn't SAP's first platform shift. Our ability to adapt reflects our commitment to lead this transformation—as we did with the cloud."
Company Response
When contacted, an SAP spokesperson stated that the firm is "strongly positioned in the AI era" and continues to evolve to help customers navigate growing complexity.
