OpenAI's Model Behavior Head Joanne Jang Announces Departure After Four and a Half Years
Joanne Jang, a pivotal executive who helped shape the core capabilities and distinctive personality of some of the world's most popular artificial intelligence tools, has announced her resignation from OpenAI. After four and a half years with the company, Jang, who served as Head of Model Behavior and was honored on the TIME100 AI 2025 list, shared the news in an emotional and reflective message to colleagues on OpenAI's internal Slack channel.
A Legacy of Major AI Innovations at OpenAI
Jang joined OpenAI when it was still a relatively small research laboratory with fewer than 200 employees. Over her tenure, she witnessed and contributed to the company's explosive corporate growth, playing a crucial role in launching several of its most renowned products to the public. Her significant contributions encompassed work on groundbreaking projects such as GPT-4 and the Chat API, DALL-E 2 for image generation, and the development of Text-to-Speech and Memory features for ChatGPT.
In her farewell note, Jang expressed deep gratitude and nostalgia, stating, "After 4.5 years, I'm leaving OpenAI. I joined when OpenAI was still a research lab under 200 people. It's felt like I've worked at at least three different companies since then, and I've had so much fun in each one." She highlighted her involvement in bringing key technologies to the world and building model behavior as a dedicated discipline.
Key Achievements and Reflections
Jang detailed her accomplishments, including designing personality for models like 4o, 4.5, and 03 through post-training and reinforcement learning, as well as establishing evaluation frameworks grounded in real-world applications. She expressed particular pride in advocating for user freedom and transparency, even when it presented challenging decisions. Recently, she initiated OpenAI Labs, where the team has been developing innovative and refreshing interfaces for human-AI interaction.
"But if I were to be remembered for one thing, I hope it's that I brought froges and pink text to OpenAI," Jang added, showcasing her unique and creative influence on the company's culture. She credited her success to the support of leadership and colleagues who embraced exploratory and creative work, often without immediate obvious value.
Gratitude and Hopes for the Future
Jang praised the individuals in Model Behavior and Labs, describing them as "some of the most curious, creative, courageous, and mischievous people I know," and emphasized the learning experiences she gained from them. She concluded her message by encouraging OpenAI to maintain its unconventional culture, stating, "OpenAI has never been a normal company, and I hope it never becomes too normal. I've loved that our culture allows for thinking and doing things in unconventional ways. Please keep doing that - I'll be rooting for you all!"
Her departure marks the end of a significant chapter at OpenAI, as the company continues to evolve in the competitive AI landscape. Jang's contributions have left an indelible mark on the development of AI technologies and the fostering of a dynamic work environment.
