OpenAI Launches GPT Image 1.5, 4x Faster to Rival Google's Nano Banana Pro
OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5: Faster AI Image Generation for All

In a significant move to solidify its position in the competitive artificial intelligence landscape, OpenAI has globally launched its new flagship image generation model, GPT Image 1.5. The company promises the model delivers creation speeds four times faster than its predecessor and introduces more precise editing capabilities. This launch comes as competition heats up with Google's viral Nano Banana Pro model.

A Creative Studio in Your Pocket

The GPT Image 1.5 model is now accessible to all ChatGPT users worldwide and via the company's API. OpenAI states the upgrade provides superior instruction-following, better text rendering within images, and a new ability to make targeted edits. Crucially, it preserves essential details like lighting, facial features, and overall composition during these modifications.

A key part of the update is the introduction of a dedicated Images section in ChatGPT's sidebar, transforming the chatbot into what OpenAI describes as "a creative studio in your pocket." This new interface simplifies the process by offering users preset filters, trending prompts, and style suggestions, reducing the need for writing lengthy descriptions. A notable feature allows continued image generation while others are still rendering, effectively eliminating wait times between creations.

"Creating and editing images is a different kind of task and deserves a space built for visuals," wrote Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, in a blog post announcing the release.

OpenAI's Strategic Counter to Google's AI Surge

The launch of GPT Image 1.5 arrives just three weeks after Google's Nano Banana Pro created massive buzz for its hyper-realistic outputs. That model contributed significantly to the Gemini platform's user growth, which reportedly surged from 450 million to 650 million users between July and October this year.

This competitive pressure reportedly triggered a "code red" within OpenAI, as declared by CEO Sam Altman in an internal memo last month. This sense of urgency accelerated the image model's release from its originally planned debut in January.

Technically, the new model excels at various editing techniques, including:

  • Adding new elements to an image
  • Removing unwanted objects
  • Combining elements from different images
  • Transposing features within a scene

Unlike older versions that often reinterpreted the entire image for minor changes, GPT Image 1.5 modifies only the requested elements while maintaining consistency across multiple edits.

Enterprise Benefits and The Road Ahead

For business users, the API version offers cost advantages, with image inputs and outputs priced 20% cheaper compared to the previous GPT Image 1 model. It also features improved logo preservation, making it more suitable for marketing and e-commerce applications. Major companies like Wix, Canva, and Figma are already testing the new model's capabilities.

OpenAI emphasized that GPT Image 1.5 represents early progress in its image generation journey. The company hinted at future updates that promise finer-grained editing controls and the ability to produce richer, more detailed outputs across various languages.

This release marks a pivotal moment in the AI image generation war, setting the stage for accelerated innovation and more powerful creative tools for users and businesses in India and across the globe.
