OpenAI to Bring Sora AI Video Generator to ChatGPT in Strategic Move

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, is reportedly planning to integrate its AI video generator, Sora, into the ChatGPT platform soon, according to a report by The Information. This development comes as part of a broader strategy shift aimed at enhancing user engagement and expanding the company's market reach.

Sora's Journey from Standalone App to ChatGPT Integration

Originally launched as a standalone application in 2025 to compete with short-form video platforms like TikTok, Sora allows users to create and share AI-generated videos. The platform has faced challenges, with data from Appfigures showing a 45% month-on-month decline in installs during January, and it dropped out of the Apple App Store rankings in the US this year. Despite these setbacks, Sora will continue to operate as a standalone app, but its integration into ChatGPT is seen as a key step to revitalize its user base.

ChatGPT's Declining User Growth and Competitive Pressures

The move to integrate Sora coincides with a period of slowing growth for ChatGPT. Since signing a contract with the Pentagon earlier this month, the AI chatbot has lost millions of users. Data from Sensor Tower reveals that Google's Gemini is now outpacing ChatGPT in several metrics, including download growth, monthly active user growth, and time spent in the app. Specifically, ChatGPT's global monthly active users grew by approximately 6% from August to November, reaching about 810 million, while Gemini's surged by around 30% during the same period.

Monetization Plans and Economic Challenges for Sora

In November of last year, OpenAI introduced a pricing model for Sora to address sustainability concerns. Users can purchase ten additional video generations for $4, while the current limit of 30 free videos per day remains unchanged. Bill Peebles, OpenAI's head of Sora, confirmed this model in a series of posts on X, noting that Pro users can generate up to 100 videos daily, but this amount may decrease with more expensive configurations. Peebles emphasized that the free limit is likely temporary due to insufficient computing power to support unlimited use. He outlined plans for a new Sora economy, including monetization pilots for early adopters and potential fees for character cameos, aiming to create revenue streams for creators while managing GPU constraints.

Strategic Implications and Future Outlook

This integration represents a significant pivot for OpenAI as it seeks to leverage ChatGPT's existing user base to boost Sora's adoption. The company faces intense competition in the AI space, with rivals like Google gaining ground. By combining its video generation capabilities with a popular chatbot, OpenAI hopes to stimulate growth and maintain its leadership in artificial intelligence innovation. The success of this strategy will depend on user reception and the ability to scale operations amid technical and economic hurdles.
