OpenAI Announces Retirement of Legacy AI Models Including GPT-4o
In a significant move that marks the evolution of artificial intelligence technology, OpenAI has officially announced the discontinuation of several legacy AI models from its ChatGPT platform. The San Francisco-based AI research organization confirmed that access to these models will be terminated starting February 13, 2026, as part of their strategic focus on enhancing newer, more advanced systems.
Which Models Are Getting Discontinued?
The models scheduled for retirement include some of OpenAI's previous generation offerings that have served users for varying periods. The complete list of legacy models going dark includes:
- GPT-4o - The flagship model from the GPT-4 series
- GPT-4.1 - An earlier iteration of the GPT-4 family
- GPT-4.1 mini - The compact version of GPT-4.1
- OpenAI o4-mini - Another variant from the previous generation
This decision comes after careful consideration and analysis of user adoption patterns. According to OpenAI's official blog post, the overwhelming majority of ChatGPT users have already migrated to the newer GPT-5.2 model, with only approximately 0.1% of users continuing to utilize GPT-4o as their primary interface.
Previous Attempts and User Feedback
This is not the first time OpenAI has attempted to phase out older models. Following the launch of GPT-5 last year, the company initially cut off access to GPT-4o and other legacy models but faced significant user backlash that forced them to temporarily restore access for paid subscribers.
OpenAI representatives stated that they have "learned from user feedback" during this process and have incorporated valuable insights into improving newer models like GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2. These improvements include enhanced personality features, stronger support for creative ideation, greater customization options for response styles and tones, and more user control over how ChatGPT interacts.

The company emphasized their commitment to providing users with more control and customization over their ChatGPT experience, stating: "Our goal is to give people more control and customization over how ChatGPT feels to use—not just what it can do."
Looking forward, OpenAI revealed plans for further enhancements in personality and creativity features while addressing concerns about unnecessary refusals and overly cautious responses. The company also reiterated their commitment to developing an upcoming 18+ mode for ChatGPT, which they describe as being grounded in "the principle of treating adults like adults, and expanding user choice and freedom within appropriate safeguards."
What Happens to Existing Conversations?
For users currently utilizing the older models, OpenAI has outlined a clear transition plan. Until February 13, 2026, conversations with GPT-4o and other legacy models will continue normally. After this cutoff date, all existing conversations will be automatically routed to newer AI models, primarily GPT-5.2.
Similarly, image generation capabilities that previously relied on GPT-4o-like models will transition to comparable models from the GPT-5 family, ensuring continuity of service while leveraging improved technology.
