The announcement was made by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves in an official statement on 8 January. The facility, part of xAI's aggressive expansion blueprint, is expected to commence operations by February 2026. This development comes amid an industry-wide surge in demand for advanced computing power required to train and run sophisticated AI models.
According to reports, the new data centre will be situated close to xAI's newly acquired power plant site in Southaven and its existing supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee. Musk had previously hinted at this expansion, announcing the purchase of a data centre named "MACROHARDRR" on 30 December, stating it would boost xAI's total compute power to 2GW.
Financial Firepower and Mounting Costs
This colossal investment highlights the immense capital required to compete at the forefront of AI technology. Internal documents cited by Bloomberg reveal the financial intensity of this race. xAI reported a net loss of $1.46 billion in the September quarter, up from $1 billion in the prior quarter.
