Elon Musk Proposes Universal High Income to Counter AI Job Losses
Earlier this week, Elon Musk reignited discussions on economic policy by advocating for a universal basic high income as the optimal strategy to mitigate job losses resulting from artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. Musk asserted that this approach could be the 'best way' to handle the impending disruptions, a statement that has left many economists baffled and sparked widespread debate across social media platforms.
Debate Ignites Over Musk's Vision of a Post-Scarcity Economy
The debate intensified when a user named Not the Bee questioned the feasibility of universal high income in addressing AI-driven unemployment. In response, Musk elaborated on his vision, predicting that AI and robotics will dramatically increase the output of goods and services by several orders of magnitude. He argued that this technological leap would create post-scarcity conditions, making luxury items like penthouses widely available without triggering inflation.
The user raised concerns about the role of money in such a future, stating: "Let's say abundance is high, that's fine. But money doesn't just buy necessities. It buys luxuries. And if everybody has a billion dollars, nobody really does. If money means nothing, what determines who gets the penthouse suite? I think poverty and starvation can go away, but how do we deal with the very real necessity of scarcity in day to day life for everything that can't be mass manufactured by robots?"
Musk countered this by explaining: "Actually, AI/Robotics will mean everyone can have a penthouse if they want. The output of goods & services will be several orders of magnitude higher than today's economy. Read the Iain Banks Culture books for the best imagining of how it will be. That said, what is the future you want? Amazing abundance seems the best to me."
Musk's Previous Predictions on a Poverty-Free Future
This is not the first instance where Musk has discussed universal high income and forecasted a future devoid of poverty. In December 2025, he made a bold prediction that "there will be no poverty in the future", emphasizing that universal high income would eliminate the need for people to save money. This remark was made in response to a post by investor Ray Dalio, who praised a bipartisan initiative aimed at enhancing financial literacy among young Americans.
Dalio had commended the Trump accounts program, supported by Michael and Susan Dell, for aligning with ideas he shared years ago in his work on reforming capitalism. Musk acknowledged the gesture but shifted focus to his long-term economic vision, reiterating his belief in a world where poverty is eradicated through technological abundance and equitable income distribution.
The ongoing discourse highlights Musk's persistent advocacy for transformative economic models in the face of rapid AI integration, challenging traditional perspectives on wealth, scarcity, and societal progress.
