Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi has urgently called upon the government to intervene in a disturbing new trend involving the misuse of artificial intelligence on social media platforms. In a formal letter addressed to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the MP highlighted the alarming rise of AI tools being used to sexualise and digitally undress women without their consent, particularly on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
An Emerging and Disturbing Digital Trend
In her communication, which she also shared publicly on X, Chaturvedi detailed an emerging pattern of abuse. She pointed out that men operating fake accounts are uploading photographs of women and then using AI prompts to minimise their clothing or create sexualised imagery. The Rajya Sabha MP stressed that this practice is not limited to images shared without permission but also targets women who post their own photos on social media.
Chaturvedi specifically criticised the AI chatbot Grok, developed by X's owner Elon Musk's company xAI, for enabling such behaviour by adhering to user requests that generate inappropriate content. She labelled this an "unacceptable and gross misuse of an AI function" that constitutes a severe breach of privacy and dignity.
A Call for Guardrails and Societal Change
The parliamentarian's appeal was twofold, targeting both technological safeguards and deep-rooted social attitudes. She called for the imposition of strict "guardrails" on AI chatbots and applications to prevent them from processing prompts that violate women's dignity. Chaturvedi asserted that big tech firms must take responsibility for building safer digital spaces.
Simultaneously, she underlined a critical need for societal intervention, emphasising better education for men from an early age in homes and schools. Her letter argued that preventing such "sick perverted" behaviour in adulthood requires foundational lessons in respect and consent.
Demanding Government Action and Accountability
Writing in her capacity as an active member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT and Communication, Priyanka Chaturvedi urged Minister Vaishnaw to take strong action. She requested that the government engage directly with the management of X to ensure robust safeguards are integrated into their AI systems, making the platform safe for women.
She warned that India cannot be a passive bystander while women's dignity is violated publicly under the guise of digital creativity and innovation. "While we welcome AI and its role in making lives easier for the world, we will not allow a proliferation of such demeaning acts towards women," the MP stated firmly. She described these acts as criminal and noted that similar instances are going unchecked on other social media platforms as well.
