Global Leaders Call for Child Protection in Digital Age

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron delivered strong messages on Thursday about safeguarding children from the potential dangers of artificial intelligence and social media platforms. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, both leaders highlighted the urgent need for international collaboration to create a safer online environment for young users.

Modi Emphasizes Curated AI Space for Children

Prime Minister Modi drew a compelling comparison between educational systems and artificial intelligence development. "We must become even more vigilant about children's safety," Modi declared during his address. "Just as a school syllabus is carefully curated, the AI space too must be child-safe and family-guided." The Prime Minister's remarks underscored India's growing concern about how emerging technologies impact younger generations.

Macron Proposes Social Media Ban for Under-15s

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his hope that India would join France and other nations in implementing a ban on social media access for children under 15 years old. "Protecting children is about not just regulation but civilisation as well," Macron emphasized during his summit speech. He presented a clear argument against exposing children to online content that would be legally prohibited in physical settings.

The French leader noted that Australia has already become the first country to ban social media for children under 16, while several European nations are moving in similar directions. In India, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), an ally of the ruling BJP, has advocated for comparable regulatory measures.

International Cooperation on Digital Safety

Macron called for unified action among governments, platforms, and regulators to establish safer internet spaces. "Our platforms, governments and regulators should be working together to make the Internet and social media a safe space," he asserted. The French President specifically addressed Prime Minister Modi during his remarks, expressing confidence that India would join this international effort to protect children and teenagers from digital harms.

Shared Vision for AI Development

Beyond child protection, both leaders articulated a common perspective on artificial intelligence development. Macron praised India's remarkable achievements in digital inclusion, particularly regarding identity verification and financial transactions accessible to its entire population of 1.4 billion people. "That is not just a tech story. That is a civilisation story," he remarked, highlighting how India has defied earlier predictions about digital economy limitations.

The French President emphasized that "hegemony from any quarter is not a fatality" in the AI landscape, advocating instead for innovation, independence, and strategic autonomy. He expressed France's determination to collaborate with India in shaping future AI regulations based on shared values and responsible technological development.

India's Ongoing Regulatory Discussions

Earlier in the week, India's IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed that the government is actively debating restrictions on children's access to social media platforms. This domestic discussion aligns with the international concerns raised by both Modi and Macron during the summit.

Maccon concluded with a powerful statement about the future direction of artificial intelligence: "The future of AI will be built by those who combine innovation and responsibility, and technology with humanity. India and France will help shape this future together." This partnership reflects growing global recognition that technological advancement must be balanced with ethical considerations, particularly regarding vulnerable populations like children.
