Meta Acquires AI Startup Manus in $2B+ Deal, Shifts Focus to Singapore
Meta's $2B Manus AI Buy: China Exit, Singapore Hiring Spree

In a major strategic move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Meta has officially confirmed its acquisition of Singapore-based AI startup, Manus. The deal, reportedly valued at over $2 billion, represents the tech giant's third-largest acquisition to date and signals a sharpened focus on developing advanced "AI agents."

Geopolitical Realignment and Operational Shift

A Meta spokesperson provided crucial clarifications regarding the startup's origins and future operations. While Manus has roots in China, the spokesperson confirmed that there will be "no continuing Chinese ownership interests in Manus AI" after the transaction is complete. To align with Meta's operational standards and navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, Manus will cease all its services and operations within mainland China.

The company's efforts will now be entirely refocused from its Singapore headquarters. This shift is already manifesting in a significant hiring push. Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer at Meta and head of the Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL), announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the lab is actively recruiting in Singapore.

"MSL is hiring in Singapore! We already have some amazing researchers and engineers there, buoyed now by the 100-strong Manus team, and we're growing fast. Feel free to DM with a resumé if interested," Wang stated in his post. The MSL is Meta's billion-dollar initiative, created by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to compete with rivals like Google and OpenAI.

The Rise of the 'General-Purpose' AI Agent

The acquisition is a direct play by Zuckerberg to dominate the emerging market for sophisticated AI agents. Manus captured global attention earlier this year with the launch of its "general-purpose" AI agent. This technology is a significant step beyond standard chatbots; it is engineered to autonomously manage complex, multi-step tasks such as conducting deep market research and writing software code.

Meta plans to integrate and scale Manus's pioneering technology across its vast ecosystem, which includes flagship platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The company outlined its vision, stating, "Manus will deliver general-purpose agents across our consumer and business products, including in Meta AI."

A Stronger Foundation for AI Ambitions

For Manus, becoming part of the Meta family provides the resources and platform needed to accelerate its mission. Xiao Hong, CEO of Manus, expressed that joining Meta offers a "stronger, more sustainable foundation" for the startup's technology and team. This acquisition not only injects top-tier AI talent into Meta's ranks but also provides the infrastructure to deploy advanced AI agents at an unprecedented scale, potentially transforming how billions of users interact with Meta's services daily.

The deal underscores the intense competition and high stakes in the global AI race, with major tech players aggressively acquiring talent and technology to secure a leading position. Meta's clear pivot to Singapore as a key AI hub, coupled with its decisive move to integrate Manus's agent technology, marks a pivotal chapter in its quest for AI supremacy.
