India AI Impact Summit 2026: Defence Official Stresses Critical Role of Sovereign AI
At the prestigious India AI Impact Summit 2026, a senior defence official delivered a compelling address on the growing integration of artificial intelligence in national security frameworks. Lt Gen Harsh Chhibber, Director General of Information Systems (DGIS) in the Ministry of Defence, emphasized that the advancement of AI must be closely tied to maintaining technological sovereignty, especially in defence applications.
Expanding AI Domains in Defence and Security
Lt Gen Chhibber outlined the transformative potential of AI in enhancing human cognitive capabilities by processing enormous datasets to facilitate timely and informed decisions. However, he cautioned against over-reliance, noting that AI has inherent limitations in complex military environments where nuanced human judgment remains irreplaceable.
The defence official identified four primary domains where AI deployment is accelerating:
- Persistent Surveillance: AI-driven systems for continuous monitoring and threat detection.
- Cognitive Warfare: Utilizing AI in psychological and information operations.
- Autonomous Systems: Development of unmanned vehicles and robotic platforms.
- Decision Support: AI tools to aid strategic planning and operational simulations.
Risks and the Imperative for Sovereign Algorithms
Highlighting significant risks associated with AI adoption, Lt Gen Chhibber pointed to automation bias, where over-trust in AI systems could lead to critical errors, and adversarial manipulation, where hostile actors might exploit vulnerabilities in AI models. He strongly advocated for the development of sovereign algorithms and secure, indigenously built systems to mitigate these threats and ensure national security is not compromised by external dependencies.
"While AI can significantly aid in planning and simulations, it cannot supplant human command in the uncertain and dynamic conditions of the battlefield," Chhibber asserted. He called for robust testing and evaluation mechanisms to validate AI systems before deployment, ensuring they meet stringent defence standards and ethical guidelines.
The summit underscored India's strategic focus on leveraging AI for defence modernization while safeguarding technological autonomy. This approach aligns with global trends where nations are increasingly prioritizing sovereign capabilities in critical technologies to maintain strategic advantage and security resilience.
