Google CEO Sundar Pichai Announces Major AI Investments and Initiatives for India
Google CEO Sundar Pichai, expressing strong confidence in India's artificial intelligence ambitions, unveiled a comprehensive suite of investments and partnerships on Wednesday. Speaking at the AI Impact Summit 2026, Pichai outlined what he described as a long-term commitment to supporting the country's AI-led growth trajectory.
"I believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and we want to be a partner," Pichai declared, emphasizing Google's strategic focus on the Indian market.
India-America Connect Initiative: Strengthening AI Connectivity
Among the key announcements was the India-America Connect Initiative, a new series of subsea cable routes designed to enhance AI connectivity between the United States, India, and multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere. This infrastructure project aims to create robust digital pathways for AI data and applications.
"Google has full-stack connectivity in India, and I have never been more excited about the future we are building together," Pichai stated during his address.
He also referenced Google's previously announced $15-billion AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, which will feature gigawatt-scale compute capacity and an international subsea cable gateway. Once operational, this facility is projected to deliver advanced AI infrastructure and generate significant employment opportunities in India.
$30 Million AI for Science Impact Challenge
On the research front, Google launched a $30 million AI for Science Impact Challenge to support global researchers utilizing artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. Pichai highlighted how AI is fundamentally transforming the pace of discovery, from advancements in quantum computing to improved prediction of extreme weather events.
"AI is the biggest platform shift of our lifetime," he remarked, describing it as one of the most powerful tools available for solving problems at a planetary scale.
Major Skilling Initiatives Across Multiple Sectors
Google announced substantial skilling programs in India, including:
- The Google AI Professional Certificate Programme available in both English and Hindi for students and early-career professionals.
- A partnership with Karma Yogi Bharat where Google Cloud will provide secure infrastructure support to a platform serving over 20 million public servants across 800 districts in 18 Indian languages.
- Collaboration with Atal Tinkering Labs to introduce generative AI assistance to more than 10,000 schools and 11 million students, with particular emphasis on robotics and coding education.
"AI has the biggest impact on people's lives when it is developed and deployed with the institutions that know these communities best," Pichai explained.
Additionally, he announced a partnership between Google DeepMind and the Indian government under the global National Partnerships Program to broaden access to frontier AI capabilities.
India's Unique Advantages in AI Development
Pichai highlighted India's distinctive strengths, including its linguistic diversity, digital public infrastructure, and massive scale, describing them as a "powerful foundation for innovation" that could serve as a potential blueprint for democratizing AI globally.
"AI must work across languages and local contexts. It must deliver real-world benefits people can rely on. Trust grows when technology is transparent, responsible, and grounded in outcomes," he emphasized.
Earlier in the day, Pichai met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit. In a post on social media platform X, Pichai noted: "We discussed how Google is helping with his mission to infuse AI at all levels in India to improve health, expand access to information in all languages, support startups, agriculture and so much more."
With announcements spanning connectivity, infrastructure, skilling, and research, Google has signaled a broad-based strategic push aligned with India's expanding artificial intelligence ambitions, positioning the country as a key player in the global AI landscape.
