The emirate is deploying AI-powered cameras as part of its "Smart Waste Management" strategy to catch littering and illegal dumping in real time, with authorities ready to impose fines of up to Dh500 on violators.
Mobile AI Surveillance Network Hits the Roads
The core of this pilot project involves mounting advanced, AI-enabled cameras directly onto waste collection and transportation vehicles. This innovative approach transforms these trucks into a mobile surveillance network, providing extensive coverage of roads, residential neighbourhoods, and public squares throughout Dubai.
Unlike traditional monitoring, these smart cameras instantly analyse the images they capture. Violations are immediately flagged and displayed on interactive digital dashboards, enabling field response teams to act swiftly. The system is specifically designed to detect a range of negative behaviours that mar the city's appearance.
Targeted Offences and Strict Penalties
The AI surveillance focuses on activities such as littering in public areas, the improper disposal of furniture and other bulky waste, and any action that leads to unsightly waste accumulation. Residents and visitors caught breaking these rules face a substantial fine of Dh500, underscoring the authorities' zero-tolerance stance towards public littering.
According to Dubai Municipality, the technology provides real-time monitoring and instant insights. It can accurately detect illegal dumping near containers, on pavements, and in open public spaces, ensuring that corrective measures are taken without delay.
Part of a Broader Smart City Vision
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, stated that this project is a key component of a larger strategy. It aims to enhance monitoring efficiency, support data-driven decision-making, and develop sustainable policies for the urban environment. Addressing potential privacy concerns, Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, clarified that the AI system is designed to document violations accurately while fully respecting community privacy.
