Claude AI Experiences Sharp Surge in Mobile Downloads and User Engagement

According to recent data from analytics firm Similarweb, downloads of Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude have increased dramatically on mobile app stores. The platform recorded a significant 55% week-over-week jump in downloads as of March 2, with average daily downloads rising to approximately 337,200 compared to about 217,000 in the previous week.

Mobile Performance and Competitive Landscape

Data from Similarweb indicates that downloads of Claude on both iOS and Android platforms saw substantial growth during the week ending March 2. This surge represents a notable increase from the prior week's figures. In contrast, downloads of ChatGPT experienced a slight decline of 5.6% over the same period, although ChatGPT maintains much higher overall numbers with around 2.2 million daily downloads.

Record User Activity and Web Traffic

Claude also demonstrated strong growth in user engagement on mobile devices. The chatbot reached an average of 9.4 million daily active users for the week ending March 2, marking a 26% increase from the previous week. On March 2 alone, Claude achieved 11.3 million active users, setting a new daily record for the platform.

Web traffic to Claude's site also rose significantly, with the platform recording 290.3 million visits in February, up 43.1% from January's 202.9 million visits. Meanwhile, ChatGPT's web traffic declined by 6.5% month-over-month but still accounted for a much larger 5.4 billion visits in February.

Company Reports and New Features

An Anthropic spokesperson revealed that more than one million new users are joining Claude daily, with each day since early last week setting a new sign-up record. The number of free active users on Claude has increased by 60% since the beginning of the year, while subscriptions to its Claude Pro and Claude Max paid plans have doubled during the same period.

Claude recently ascended to the No. 1 free app on the U.S. iOS App Store, climbing from No. 42 in early February. Earlier this week, Anthropic introduced a new feature allowing users to import conversation data from other AI chatbots, enabling Claude to learn user preferences based on previous interactions and facilitating easier data migration and continued conversations.

Context and Implications

The surge in downloads and user growth comes amid Anthropic's reported fallout with the U.S. government, including being labeled a 'national security risk' by the Department of War. This development highlights the intensifying competition among major AI chatbot platforms as they innovate to attract and retain users in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
