In a stunning demonstration of robotic athleticism, dozens of Chinese-developed humanoid robots surpassed professional runners during a half-marathon event in Beijing on Sunday, April 19. The performance was not only dominant but also marked a significant technological leap, as the machines broke previous records and finished ahead of human competitors.

The contrast between this year's race and last year's event was described as stark. In 2023, the competition was plagued by mishaps and slow-moving machines, with the champion robot taking over two hours and 40 minutes to complete the 21-kilometer course. This year, however, the winning robot crossed the finish line in an impressive 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
To put this achievement into perspective, the victorious robot, developed by the Chinese brand Honor, was several minutes faster than the human world record of 57 minutes and 31 seconds, set by Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon. Unlike previous iterations where robots were often remote-controlled, nearly half of this year's entrants navigated the entire course autonomously using AI. A key innovation was the incorporation of liquid cooling technology, borrowed from smartphone design, to keep the robot's motors cool during intense physical exertion. The race results echo comments made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has identified China as Tesla's most formidable competitor in the AI and robotics arena. During an earnings call last year, Musk emphasized China's strengths in scaling, manufacturing, and AI development.
I think China will be by far the biggest competitor in the humanoid robot market, Musk stated. China is extremely good at scaling and manufacturing and is also strong in AI—the models being released there are already quite good and are improving rapidly.

This event is part of a broader trend showcasing China's advancements in robotics. Earlier this year, the annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala, a major cultural event comparable to the US Super Bowl, featured humanoid robots from four domestic startups: Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab. These robots performed martial arts and fight sequences alongside human child performers, demonstrating their agility and integration into entertainment.
