Bill Gates Withdraws from AI Impact Summit Amid Epstein Document Controversy

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has unexpectedly withdrawn from delivering his keynote address at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, which is currently underway from February 16 to 20. Originally scheduled as one of the primary speakers, Gates will no longer participate in the event following careful consideration by his organization.

Official Statement from the Gates Foundation

In a post on social media platform X, the Gates Foundation announced that Ankur Vora, President of the Africa and India Offices, will represent the organization at the summit instead. The foundation stated, "After careful consideration, and to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit's key priorities, Mr. Gates will not be delivering his keynote address." They emphasized their continued commitment to health and development work in India.

Background of the Controversy

The decision comes against the backdrop of recent online discussions referencing documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019. Gates's name appears in portions of documents released by the US Justice Department. In one note cited in the material, Epstein allegedly claimed he had helped Gates obtain drugs "to deal with consequences of sex with Russian girls."

Gates has categorically denied these allegations. In an interview with Nine News, he described them as "absolutely absurd and completely false." Additionally, in a separate NPR interview, Melinda French Gates indicated that her former husband's meetings with Epstein were among the factors that contributed to the end of their 27-year marriage.

Confusion Over Attendance

Earlier, government sources had indicated that Gates would attend the meeting. However, a spokesperson for his foundation initially contradicted this, stating, "Bill Gates is attending the AI Impact Summit. He will be delivering his keynote as scheduled." By Tuesday, the summit website no longer listed his name among the key speakers, signaling the change in plans.

The AI Impact Summit features a lineup of tech moguls, industry leaders, policymakers, founders, and technologists. Gates's withdrawal marks a significant shift in the event's programming, drawing attention to the ongoing controversies surrounding his name in the released Epstein files.
