Apple's Siri Poised for Its Most Significant Transformation in Years
Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce one of the most substantial updates to its virtual assistant, Siri, in recent memory. According to a detailed report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the tech giant is currently testing a dedicated Siri application for iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. This standalone app, internally codenamed "Campo," represents a fundamental shift in how users will interact with Siri.
A New Era for Siri: The Dedicated App and Conversation History
The introduction of a dedicated Siri app marks a departure from its current integrated but often hidden functionality. Alongside this app, Apple is developing a new "Ask Siri" toggle that will be embedded directly into menus across the company's built-in applications. Both of these innovations are anticipated to be officially unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2026, which is scheduled to commence on June 8.
The standalone Siri application will introduce a feature that has been conspicuously absent from the assistant until now: a persistent conversation history. Users will gain the ability to browse through their past interactions with Siri, viewing them in either a list or a grid format. This history will support functionalities such as pinning favorite conversations, searching across all past interactions, and seamlessly resuming discussions from where they were left off.
The app's interface is said to draw inspiration from Apple's Messages application, incorporating familiar elements like chat bubbles, a dedicated text entry field, and a toggle for switching between voice and text input. Additionally, the new Siri app will allow users to upload documents and photographs for analysis. When initiating a new conversation, Siri will proactively suggest prompts based on the user's historical usage patterns.
Siri's New Home: The Dynamic Island and Enhanced Search
Apple is also experimenting with a completely redesigned Siri interface that will reside within the Dynamic Island on compatible iPhone models, rather than illuminating the edges of the screen as it currently does. Upon activation, this new interface will prompt users with "Search or Ask" options. During processing, it will display a distinctive pill-shaped "Searching" indicator. Once results are ready, the interface will expand into a translucent panel utilizing Apple's Liquid Glass design language.
Reports indicate that Apple's Spotlight search functionality is being integrated into this unified Siri interface. This integration is expected to grant Siri access to a significantly broader range of on-device data compared to the existing setup, potentially making searches more comprehensive and contextually aware.
The AI Engine: Google Gemini Powers the Next-Generation Siri
The revamped Siri assistant will be powered by updated Apple Foundation Models that have been developed in collaboration with Google's Gemini artificial intelligence. This partnership is part of a substantial agreement between Apple and Google, reportedly valued at approximately one billion dollars, which was confirmed in January according to Bloomberg's sources.
This advanced AI integration will enable Siri to pull information from a user's personal data, including messages, notes, and emails. It will also return web search results accompanied by summaries and relevant images, positioning it as a more direct competitor to AI-powered search tools like Perplexity and Google's own Gemini. Furthermore, Apple is testing a "Write with Siri" feature that will appear at the top of the keyboard, making its Writing Tools more immediately accessible than in the current implementation.
Given that previous timelines for a Siri overhaul have been delayed—most recently from an early 2025 target to the current 2026 schedule—the upcoming WWDC will serve as the definitive test for how much of this ambitious vision Apple has successfully translated into a shippable product.
