Apple CEO Tim Cook Steps Down, John Ternus to Succeed

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced his decision to step down from the role, with John Ternus set to take over as the company's eighth CEO. The transition will occur on September 1, 2026, marking a significant leadership shift for the tech giant. Cook, who has served as CEO since 2011 after succeeding Steve Jobs, will assume the position of executive chairman of Apple's board of directors.

Cook's Tenure and Apple's Growth

During Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization surged from under $350 billion to an astonishing $4 trillion. Industry experts have long speculated that the 51-year-old Ternus would eventually succeed Cook. Ternus, previously Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, will be replaced in an expanded capacity by Johny Srouji, with Tom Marieb taking on a more direct role.

Ternus: An Apple Veteran

John Ternus is an Apple veteran with 25 years at the company. He has worked under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook. In his memo, Cook praised Ternus as "a brilliant engineer and thinker who has spent the past 25 years building the Apple products our users love, obsessed with every detail." Ternus has been a key architect of Apple's product pipeline, overseeing hardware engineering for the iPad, AirPods, and recent iPhone models.

Hardware Remains Core to Apple

The promotion of the hardware engineering chief to CEO underscores the central role of hardware in Apple's business. Morgan Stanley analysts noted that "promoting him to CEO clearly shows Apple's emphasis on product at the center of the flywheel will remain."

Ternus's Message to Employees

In a note to Apple employees, Ternus expressed gratitude for the opportunity: "I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple's mission forward. Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor. It has been a privilege to help shape products that have changed how we interact with the world. I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve, and I am humbled to step into this role, promising to lead with the values that have defined Apple for half a century."
