Apple AirPods with Cameras Enter Final Development Stage

Apple's long-rumored AirPods with built-in cameras have moved into the final stretch of development, with employees inside the company already wearing prototypes day to day. According to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the earbuds have hit the design validation testing (DVT) stage—the last big checkpoint before Apple starts making early mass-production units in the production validation testing (PVT) phase.

Hardware Details

The hardware is close to locked. The cameras sit in both the left and right buds, and the only visible giveaway is a slightly longer stem to fit the new components. Otherwise, they look a lot like the AirPods Pro 3.

Camera Functionality

These cameras aren't here to replace your iPhone's shooter. Bloomberg says they capture low-resolution visuals that feed Siri context about whatever's in front of you. Stare at a half-empty fridge and ask what to cook for dinner. Walk through an unfamiliar neighborhood and get turn-by-turn directions that name the actual landmark you're about to pass. Apple is also testing reminders that fire when the camera spots something relevant—say, an item you'd added to a shopping list earlier.

Privacy Measures

To address the obvious privacy worry, Apple has built in a small LED that lights up whenever visual data is being sent to the cloud. Whether anyone will actually notice that light on something this small is another question, as Bloomberg points out.

Release Timeline

Apple originally wanted these AirPods on shelves in the first half of 2026. That plan slipped because the new AI-powered Siri wasn't ready. Per Bloomberg, the upgraded Siri is now on track for September, after Apple swapped in Alphabet's Gemini models under the hood. The earbuds could land in the same window, though Apple may hold them back if it isn't happy with the visual intelligence experience.

The project has been in the works for about four years and sits alongside Apple's smart glasses and a camera-equipped pendant, both trailing the AirPods.
